What Is the ASAM Criteria?
Previously known as the ASAM patient placement criteria, the ASAM Criteria is a comprehensive and widely used set of guidelines for placement, continued stay, and transfer or discharge of patients with addiction and co-occurring disorders.
ASAM’s criteria provide a separate placement rule for adolescents and adults, which allows substance abuse professionals to create an individualized and comprehensive treatment plan. Treatment plans are developed through a multidimensional patient assessment over five levels of treatment based on the structure, the degree of direct medical management provided, the intensity of the treatment, and the safety and security of treatment services provided.
